Aston Villa in for £5 million Crystal Palace star – report

Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy has been touted with a £5 million switch to Aston Villa, according to national reports.

The Daily Mail cite Villa with big interest in the 29-year-old who, last season, made 33 appearances for Roy Hodgson’s side.

The report suggests Villa will relax their transfer policy on only buying players under the age of 28, with Dean Smith now keen to add Premier League experience right through his side’s spine.

McCarthy has less than two years to run on his current deal at Selhurst Park and has fully recovered from a serious double leg fracture sustained while playing for Everton in 2018.

Last season, McCarthy started 16 of Palace’s 38 Premier League games, with Hodgson mainly utilising the Irish midfielder from off the bench (17).

As for Villa, Smith could well be in for a central midfielder to provide the likes of Conor Hourihane, Douglas Luiz and John McGinn with serious competition. Villa are reportedly in the market for a No.8 and McCarthy certainly fits the profile, a player who’s proven in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Hearts full-back Aaron Hickey, 18, has been linked with a switch to Villa Park. You can read more on that HERE.
