Carlo Ancelotti has reiterated the importance of Leighton Baines to the Everton squad as the club await his response to the offer of a new one-year contract.

The left-back has signed an extension keeping him at Goodison Park until at least the end of the season, with his previous contract initially due to run out at the end of June.

The Blues have shown their desire to keep the veteran defender at the club for the 2020/21 campaign and are still waiting for his answer.

And Ancelotti has once again made clear that he hopes Baines puts pen-to-paper on the new deal, as he sets an example for a number of young players at the club.

The manager told his pre-Leicester press conference: “Leighton Baines extended his contract until the end of this season and after that I think we have time to wait for an answer from him.

“I hope. I think Leighton is an important part of this squad but, above all, of this club.

“We have a lot of respect for him as a player, a professional and as a man.

“It’s important for the young players to have a good example in front of them. Anthony [Gordon] and the others who are training with us have a really good example every day on the pitch.”

Speaking particularly of Anthony Gordon, Ancelotti again had praise.

The youngster was handed his full Premier League debut as Everton returned to action against Liverpool earlier this month, and the manager was asked about what he expects from the winger in the near future.

He responded: “Just to improve. To us this period that he trained with us to increase his quality.

“He has a lot of quality, but he’s young and has a lot of possibility to grow fast.”

Everton have seen a marked increase in form since Ancelotti took over at Goodison Park, and the quest for potential Europa League qualification is still on.

But the manager made clear that it’s not results up to this point which have given him confidence for the future, but knowing what his side can become.

“I have confidence for the future not for what we did, but for what we can do,” Ancelotti remarked.

“I think that we have a young squad with a lot of players who can improve their quality, can improve their confidence.

“Apart from whats going on in the market, I think that this team can improve if we are able to improve the young players we have here at this moment.”
