Former Reading manager Paul Clement is reportedly in the running for the manager’s job at Premier League side Watford.

The 47-year-old, who has been out of work since being sacked by Royals last December, has been strongly linked with the position at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets dismissed Quique Sanchez Flores – already their second manager of the season – over the weekend following the 2-1 defeat at relegation rivals Southampton.

It left Watford six points from safety with just one victory from their 14 league matches to date.

Clement won just seven of his 30 games in charge of Royals, having been brought in to replace Jaap Stam at the end of March 2018.

Despite vast experience as an assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at some of Europe’s top clubs including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, Clement failed to replicate his success with Reading and at Derby County and Swansea City, where he had short periods as manager.

MailOnline are reporting Clement and Chris Hughton have ‘held talks’ with Watford to replace Flores.

The squad are reportedly keen for a British manager to be appointed and one with ‘high motivational skills.’

Current U23s boss and former Reading loan midfielder Hayden Mullins is taking temporary charge of the Hornets.
