Four positions Everton must strengthen in next transfer window

Everton need to sign at least four players to progress under Carlo Ancelotti next season according to the latest Royal Blue podcast.

A centre-back, right-back, central-midfielder, goalkeeper – and possibly a winger – would all be landed in an ideal transfer window although implications of the coronavirus crisis are considered.

In a question and answer special, the ECHO’s Everton reporter Adam Jones asserted that defence is the most pressing situation for Ancelotti and Marcel Brands to attend to when the market reopens.

“You can take your pick of four or five options who might be starting next season!” Jones said.

“You’ve got Seamus Coleman, Djibril Sidibe, Jonjoe Kenny or maybe even a new signing coming in. You just don’t know so I’d say that is important and centre-back is another important position.

“Mason Holgate has done really well this season and that has been great to see but we need four senior options in that area.

“Whether we’ll see Lewis Gibson step up after his loan move remains to be seen but I’d say a signing there would be the way to go.”

When asked for other areas that must be strengthened, Jones added:  “A central midfielder, too.

“We need cover in central midfield if we’re sticking with the 4-4-2 system because I still have my doubts about whether this system is going to be right for the current squad.

“We’re either going to have to sign players to fit into the 4-4-2 better or adapt the formation. Either way, we’re going to need another midfielder to advance us in that area.

“And then take your pick. A winger and maybe a goalkeeper? It is a really interesting situation. Perhaps we will need another goalkeeper to challenge Jordan Pickford.”

Sam Carroll, meanwhile, urged Ancelotti to strengthen the spine of the current squad.

“The two that Everton absolutely have to get is a centre-back and a central-midfielder,” he added. “These are the two positions I absolutely think, 100 per cent, we cannot go into the new season without.

“A right-back, in the current climate, if we had to prioritise, Seamus Coleman is dependable. We can eke another season out of him and if Kenny comes back, he has shown he can be a dependable option. I’d be comfortable with that.

“But if we can, a right-back as well and another winger and another goalkeeper if our hand is forced. Really I’d be aiming for a centre-back, two central midfielders, a right-back and a winger which shows the scale of the task.”
