Anfield’s Homebaked bakery has paid tribute to an Everton legend – with a product which is as nice as pie!

Goalscoring great Dixie Dean loved scoring at Anfield’s Kop End.

After a remarkable 21-minute hat-trick there in 1931 he said: “Scoring there was a delight to me. I turned to the crowd and bowed three times to them. They never liked me doing that.”

Now the famous bakery which lies in the shadow of Anfield’s iconic stand has created a “Dixie Dean pie.”

Containing prime cut steak, reduced in Guinness and with five different vegetables, it will be on sale both at the bakery and at Goodison Park’s fan zone when supporters are readmitted next season.

Creator Dan Shiels, Homebaked head chef who has cheffed for more than 25 years and has Michelin star establishments on his CV, explained: “It was an honour to be able to create a pie in recognition of such an iconic individual.

“The pie contains entirely natural ingredients, no additives or thickening agents, with the Guinness stock reduced several times so that the steak is as tender as possible.

“All the ingredients come from local suppliers and we hope it will prove as popular as our Shankly pies.”

The new pie already has the seal of approval from Dixie’s family.

Three generations of the legendary goalscorer’s family were invited to Homebaked to sample the new pie, daughter Barbara, grand-daughter Melanie and great-grandson Daniel, and they declared the pie “absolutely delicious.”

Melanie added: “Grandad enjoyed a pint of Guinness and loved his steak so the pie has been created very much in his image.

“It’s authentic and it really is delicious.”

Homebaked is a community land trust and co-operative bakery situated on the boundary between the neighbourhoods of Everton and Anfield, just opposite Liverpool Football Club.

The project is co-owned and co-produced by people who live and work in the area with all the money generated using to benefit the local community.

Homebaked have even agreed to donate 25p from every pie sold to a fund raising walk up Scafell Pike planned by Dixie’s great-grandson Daniel on August 22 to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.
