Is Ivan Toney on his way to the English Premier League?
Peterborough United forward Ivan Toney is one of the most sought-after players in the English market right now with the likes of Celtic, Rangers and West Brom all interested in signing him.
And over the past couple of days, there have been two major developments regarding the 24-year-old centre-forward who has netted 24 goals in 32 League One matches during the 2019-20 season.
The first one is positive with Football Insider claiming that Ivan Toney could be bought for a fee of around £8m which is great news for Scottish sides Celtic and Rangers FC who are not known to be massive spenders.
The report claims: “Peterborough are hopeful a bidding war for Rangers, Celtic and West Brom target Ivan Toney can secure a fee worth up to £8million, Football Insider understands.
“A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Posh are holding out for an initial £5m price that could soar to £8m with add-on costs.”
The second news is not particularly a good one for the so-called smaller teams since the Peterborough Telegraph have quoted an anonymous source saying that Premier League side Watford FC are interested in signing Ivan Toney.
The source told PT: “Toney has been on Watford’s radar throughout 2020 and they like what they have seen.
“If they go down they will have £40 million in parachute payments and they would expect Toney to go well at Championship level.”
The report does not say what Watford intend to do if they manage to hold onto their Premier League status but even if they do withdraw their interest if they remain in the top flight then also things do not look bright for the Old Firm clubs.
Apart from Watford, teams like AFC Bournemouth, Leeds and German side RB Leipzig are all keen to land Toney.
