Jamaal Lascelles reveals why Newcastle United players are prepared to sweat blood for Steve Bruce
Jamaal Lascelles has revealed that Newcastle United players are desperate not to let Steve Bruce down this season.
The Toon skipper has opened up about the squad’s understanding of the fact that Bruce came into his role as boss late in pre-season, but he now feels that his team-mates are responding to what the former Manchester United skipper wants.
A win could even propel the black-and-whites close to or into the top 10 if other results go their way.
Lascelles said ahead of the weekend’s big clash: “He’s come into the job late on, he only had a short pre-season and then had to pick a team for the Arsenal game.
“He’s had to get his philosophy across to the players during the course of a season.
“I finally think it is starting to click.
“He is a very good and genuine man.”
Lascelles and his team-mates were blasted by Bruce after the 5-0 defeat against Leicester City but the last four performances since what Bruce described as a “debacle” have been respectable enough.
United beat Man United 1-0, lost narrowly to Chelsea, picked up a point against Wolves and have since beaten West Ham.
Lascelles, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “It means a lot to him and you can tell this means the world to him having this job.
“I think he is doing a fantastic job and the players really respect him.
“Hopefully we can just keep picking points up.”
