Leicester City chairman has ‘ambitious’ plan for newly-promoted sister club
Leicester City chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha says he has an “ambitious” plan for sister club OH Leuven after their promotion was confirmed.
Leuven were granted a place in the Belgian top flight on Friday when the Pro League decided to increase the number of teams from 16 to 18.
Sunday’s game between Leuven and Beerschot-Wilrijk, scheduled to be the second leg of a promotion play-off, will now decide who finishes as champions, with both teams heading up together.
Following the promotion, which will see Leuven back in First Division A for the first time since 2016, Top promised a sustainable but ambitious approach to keeping them there.
“It’s not the way we expected it to be, and certainly not how we hoped it, nevertheless, I am extremely happy with the news that OH Leuven can once again reach the highest level of Belgian football,” he said.
“Our players, staff and supporters deserve this promotion. It may have been confirmed in a meeting room on Friday, but I firmly believe that we will be promoted thanks to the performance on the field.
“After all, you don’t stand a chance without winning matches and thus putting ourselves in a promising position for promotion. We fought all season to be one of the best teams in the series and we got the reward for this on Friday.
“The promotion is a reward for the hard work of all our players, the city and the supporters over the past three seasons. I would therefore like to thank everyone personally for helping us achieve our goal.
“We encountered several challenges on our way. We have drawn important lessons that make us stronger on our way forward. Whatever happened, our supporters always stood behind the club.
“The promotion to 1A and the chance to compete with the best teams in Belgian football ensure that we can start the next phase in our vision with the club. Retaining OH Leuven’s position at the highest level will still require hard work and diligence. I can confirm to all our supporters that we will do this in a sustainable way. Our plan is ambitious.
“Thank you all for the continued support. I’m already eagerly looking forward to the moment when we can all be together again!”
