Liverpool Unbothered by Prospect of Facing Everton Without Alisson

When first choice goalkeeper Alisson picked up a red card and one match ban for a rather bizarre handling of the ball outside the area against Brighton, there was surprisingly little angst or concern amongst Liverpool fans.

Mostly that came down to Adrian, the man who will be taking his place against Everton on Wednesday evening, having already more than proven his worth by stepping up to cover for an injured Alisson earlier in the season.

“Adri has done brilliantly when he’s come in during the season,” was Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson’s take on the matter when asked about Alisson’s red and another chance for Adrian to start for Liverpool.

“He’s been in good shape in training, so hopefully he just continues that into the games where Ali will be missing. I think Adri has proven that he’s more than capable of doing a very good job there.”

In fact, so far in the league and Europe, Adrian has played one game more than Alisson this season for Liverpool. On Wednesday, he’ll stretch the lead to two—though a busy December fixture list should put Alisson back on top.

While Alisson’s statistics do just edge his backup’s, it’s a testament to how well Adrian has played when called upon that neither fans nor teammates were massively bothered at the world’s best stopper picking up a red.

And that, says Henderson, is something that applies to this Liverpool squad not just at goalkeeper but at other positions, where the captain sees quality in depth—quality that he’s sure will be called upon sooner or later.

“It’s important to have everyone ready, everyone available when there’s injuries and to come in and be up to speed,” he added. “We have got a lot of good players, a lot of players that maybe want to play a little bit more.

“But we’ve shown that we have got a really good squad and I’m sure we’ll need to use it from now right up until the end of the season.”
