Now is the time for Leicester City to buy world-class players and cement their place in the top six, Andy King has said.

City recorded the fifth-best finish in the club’s history by taking fifth place in the Premier League table this season, and while they don’t have Champions League to offer, they do have European football in the form of the Europa League.

King, who for the first time in more than 15 years is not under contract at the King Power Stadium, believes City are an attractive place to play for top talents, given the trajectory of the club, the young stars they have developed, and their involvement in Europe.

“The manager they’ve got in now is an exceptional manager,” King told Sky Sports. “He’s done a brilliant job pretty much wherever he’s been.

“The lads all buy in to what he’s doing. They believe in him 100 per cent, they believe in his methods 100 per cent.

“I think it’s an attractive club in terms of signing players and the club they’re trying to create. They’ve got some of the best young players in the country now. It’s a club only on an onward trajectory.

“They’ve qualified for Europe this year which is an unbelievable achievement. With that brings the opportunity to sign European and world-class players, because they really want European football. Now is the time to kick on and really cement the top six.”

Not only that, but City have the Premier League’s leading goalscorer in their ranks.

Jamie Vardy hit 23 goals to clinch the Golden Boot, and King, who has seen the striker’s full journey at City first hand, believes he is now better than ever at the age of 33.

“He’s more of an all-round player now,” King said. “I think Brendan has done a good job of making sure he’s fresh in and around the penalty box.

“In pre-season he was saying we don’t want you running out in the channels and pressing full-backs. Make sure you have your high energy and speed around the goal.

“That’s helped him, having the confidence from the manager. His hold up play and link play has really improved. He’s the complete number nine.”
