Southampton have mocked Liverpool on Twitter after a Reds fan account asked the Saints if they’d send Danny Ings back to Anfield.

Ings is a contender for the Premier League Golden Boot, having scored 18 goals this season, his best tally in the top flight.

The England international rejoined boyhood club Southampton permanently last summer from Liverpool after a highly underwhelming spell at Anfield.

But it appears Reds fans want him back after seeing his recent form.

Fan account @LiverpoolFF wrote on Twitter: “Hey @SouthamptonFC, congrats on your win today. Just wondering if you’d consider letting us have @IngsDanny back at Liverpool?

“We’d happily let you have Lovren back in return. Smiling face with open mouth and smiling eyes. Best wishes, Liverpool FC fans.”

However, the official Saints account was having none of it, brutally responding: “You’ve had enough from us…”

Current Reds stars Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana have all played for Southampton in the past.

Jurgen Klopp said recently that he was delighted to see Ings thriving on the south coast, and that he had no hard feelings towards the 27-year-old.

“Everybody in this building is so happy about the situation of Danny. Even if he is not anymore, he is still ‘our boy’, kind of, and we all follow each step of his career,” Klopp said.

“We are celebrating goals he scores – that will be different tomorrow obviously, but apart from the games against us we couldn’t wish him better than we do. He is such a wonderful person.

“We had an intense time here together, unfortunately there was not enough game time involved for I think some good reasons and the decision he made, going to Southampton, was a perfect decision.

“There as well he needed a little bit of time to get rhythm back, but now he is on fire, like the whole team actually, the turnaround they make is exceptional. But for Danny really, we couldn’t be more happy and we’re really happy to see him tomorrow again. Of course we wish him all the best, the best season of his life, but not tomorrow.”
