Watford stars Andre Gray, Nathaniel Chalobah and Domingos Quina have been slammed for their ‘gross stupidity and lack of professionalism’ after they broke coronavirus lockdown rules.

The Hornets trio were left out their squad to face Southampton on Sunday after attending a party.

Gray reportedly held a celebration at his home, which he shares with Little Mix singer Leigh-Anne Pinnock, to mark his 29th birthday, with Chalobah and Quina visiting.

It was the striker’s birthday on Friday, the day after Watford’s 1-0 defeat to Burnley in the Premier League.

They followed that up with a 3-1 defeat at home to Southampton on Sunday, and Gray, Chalobah and Quina’s absence was noted.

Ahead of the game, the club posted on Twitter explaining the trio were omitted by manager Nigel Pearson ‘to ensure the health and safety of all players, staff and officials at today’s game’.

And it is claimed that is because they attended a party to celebrate Gray’s birthday, along with around 20 people, at his home.

Current lockdown and social distancing guidelines from the government allow six people to meet together in gardens, parks or beaches if they continue to remain two metres apart.

And talkSPORT host Ally McCoist was baffled by the players’ actions, which have only added to their club’s crisis as they fight for their Premier League safety.

Rangers legend McCoist said on the talkSPORT Breakfast: “We’ve been talking about the great things footballers have been doing in terms of COVID-19 recently, it’s been great.

“But when you get something like this, it just leaves you scratching your head at the gross stupidity and lack of professionalism.

“I feel for Nigel. I bet he cannot believe it.

“They’re fighting for their lives to stay in the Premier league and this is the last thing you need and the last thing you expect.”

On Saturday, Watford confirmed they were investigating the allegations after a number of social media posts appeared to show the players at the party together.

Pearson refused to speak about the matter in his post-match press conference, but did address his team’s worrying slide since the return of Premier League football.

Watford have struggled since the restart, having taken just one point from three matches.

The Hornets now sit precariously, as they are only one point above the relegation zone.

“We are fighting for our lives and we have not found performance levels I would expect from us,” said Pearson on Sunday.
